EmUrgentCare treats 100,000th patient

Daily Mail - Published: Thursday, November 5, 2009

COXSACKIE — EmUrgentCare has announced that the 100,000th patient visit occurred Tuesday at the 6-year old medical facility in Coxsackie.

EmUrgentCare opened on Sept. 15, 2003 with Dr. Stephen Hassett at the helm along with one physician assistant. That first day the new medical facility saw six patients.

Today, the company handles nearly 20,000 patient visits annually and has increased its medical staff to three Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians and four emergency medicine trained Physician Assistants.

“We feel truly honored to be trusted so much by the people of our community and are committed to continue to provide the high quality and prompt medical care our patients have become accustomed to,” said Dr. Hassett of this momentous achievement. Over its 6-year history, EmUrgentCare has accumulated over 36,000 individual patients registered in their electronic medical record system. As of Jan. 1, 2010 the facility became completely “paperless” when they implemented a state of the art digital x-ray system.

Pamela Hassett, wife of Dr. Hassett and the medical practice’s Chief Operating Officer, said, “When we first opened we could not afford the expensive digital x-ray system so we purchased an analog system. But after five years our success with patient care combined with the significant price decrease for the expensive technology came together to allow us to implement this final piece of the puzzle to become a truly paperless medical facility.”

There are many reasons that a paperless medical record system is important for patients. EmUrgentCare medical providers have immediate access to information from prior visits a patient has made to the facility which can make treatment more thorough, effective and efficient and electronic medical charts are easily transferred to a patient’s primary care provider for follow-up care.

EmUrgentCare is well known and appreciated for the prompt care provided at the facility for patients on a walk-in basis rather than waiting several days for an opening with their primary care provider or a long, multi-hour wait in an emergency department.  The facility has seen at least one patient from nearly every state in the country and patients regularly come from as far as Pittsfield Massachusetts for treatment because they are seen and back home faster than their local ER.

Of this, Dr. Hassett said “It is the emergency medicine training and focus of our medical providers that creates this efficiency along with a finely crafted and tuned patient flow process from the first moment a patient walks through the door until they leave our facility.”

Urgent care medicine is still relatively new in the United States but this newer medical specialty is growing in popularity and facilities like EmUrgentCare are recognized for providing a much needed service for patients who need immediate care for their medical conditions and relieving the stress on overburdened hospital emergency departments.

Dr. Hassett got his medical degree at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and received his Emergency Medicine training at Albany Medical Center.  Along with his responsibilities at EmUrgentCare, Dr. Hassett also works just a few shifts each month as an attending physician in the Emergency Department of Albany Medical Center.

Of this Dr. Hassett says, “It is critical that I maintain my skills and exposure to the high acuity medicine practiced at a Level I trauma center and have the ability to bring that knowledge back to the medical staff at EmUrgentCare. You would be amazed at the variety and intensity of some of the cases we see at EmUrgentCare and it is so important that we are prepared for any situation that might walk through our doors.”

Further, Dr. Hassett said, “Having great relationships with specialists affiliated with a hospital is also critical for our patients who may need referrals or quick access to a life-saving procedure in the hospital.”

Regarding occupational medicine, Dr. Hassett says that it is a logical piece of the medical services EmUrgentCare provides because they treat workplace injuries effectively and efficiently as well as all of the other complement of occupational medicine services including pre-employment physicals, drug, vision, and hearing testing and much more.

EmUrgentCare and the Hassetts are also committed to the community as evidenced by their dedicated and consistent financial assistance to many local charities and youth activities including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Greene YMCA, Coxsackie-Athens Rotary Club, Little Leagues, Soccer and Football clubs, youth arts events and countless others.

EmUrgentCare’s success in our community can be attributed to many factors, including the emergency medicine training of the staff, the full range of services provided both individual patients and companies and the convenient hours the facility is open every day of the year.  But most important is the passion for medicine and patient health that Dr. Hassett and his entire staff have along with their outstanding commitment to the community. This momentous occasion falls perfectly with the fact that Nov. 9-13 is Urgent Care Awareness Week.

EmUrgentCare provides medical care to patients of all ages on a walk in basis at their facility on Route 9W in Coxsackie as well as a full complement of Occupational Medicine Services for many local businesses. The well respected medical facility is open 10am to 10pm every day of the year.
